How do I know what I want to say until I write it?

"I write to discover what I know" -- Author Flannery O'Connor

No matter what you’re writing:  copy for an ad, a press release, blog, white paper or a 140-character tweet, there’s an effort that goes into selecting just the right words.  Put together, those word choices form a greater message.  But before the message is complete, the act of choosing compels the writer to think about what he or she is trying to express, and often (at least in my experience) to travel through several iterations of those thoughts before discovering what it is you want to say.
